Varkala

Leaving our guest house in Negombo, Sri Lanka at 0500 by auto rickshaw for Colombo airport, it seemed that we had quite a lot of travelling ahead of us to our next stop - a short flight to Trivandrum and we were quickly through the formalities and on Indian soil, then a taxi into Trivandrum railway station, a train waiting to leave stopping at Varkala town and then on one of those lovely old Ambassador taxis out to Varkala beach and we were installed in our guest house "cottage" by 1100! Varkala beach is a long stretch of beach backed by red cliffs - a very attractive place which is a little in danger from over-development, cliff erosion and litter! Our guest house was just 30 metres back from the path along the North Cliff and steps down to the beach. At the time we were there the sea was lovely to swim in - the waves were breaking well out so we could have a good time in the water without worries.

The path along the cliffs is quite fun with lots of clothes/souvenirs shops and restaurants. We found one restaurant (Clafouti) in a lovely location, with beautiful views out to sea and along the coast and, as they seemed to cater to our every wish (from muesli curd and fruit or the usual western breakfasts to sandwiches with chips and salad to curries and all other options you would imagine), we ended up having practically every meal there. Of course, they (like everywhere else) prominently advertised Kingfisher (premium table water, of course!) - so we also ended up there each day in the late afternoon for our sundowner beer! (Kingfisher beer appears on no menus and is served in pottsry mugs - no bottles in sight!). The four days at Varkala were very relaxing - we spent all our time there apart from a short trip into Varkala town where we had lunch in a local vegetarian restaurant and enjoyed our first masala dosa since leaving India a month previously. We could certainly imagine spending longer there ... ...
