Negombo - stopover ...

Picked up at 0700 by our regular auto rickshaw driver, it was just a short drive from town to Trivandrum airport. Just one problem - the flight was delayed 2 hours (leaving at 1145 instead 0945).

Originally, we envisaged trying to get to the Cultural Triangle area from Colombo airport the same day but happily (particularly with the delay) we had decided instead to stay in Negombo (just 14k from the airport) for the night and then head off the next morning.

Found an autorickshaw outside the airport building who took us to the (already reserved) accommodation. Room not wonderful so we have not bothered with a photo! It was certainly ok for the night and the lady who ran the place was very pleasant (and made a particularly good effort with the breakfast the following morning).

Negombo is split between the main town to the south and a tourist area behind the beach to the north of town (around a road called Lewis Place). It would not be our choice for a beach holiday spot but there are lot of tourists there.

Normally, as both of us had developed nasty coughs in Trivandrum, we thought we would do very little in the afternoon and rest ourselves. However, our guest house lady thought we should perhaps check out the bus times at the bus station for the following day ...

We took an auto rickshaw as it looked quite a long way (much too far to walk) to the bus stand in the main town and enquired regarding the buses (no need to book) - and then decided to check out the town. We headed along Custom House Road out towards the town beach/fish market. This turned out to be full of interest - along the lagoon, with traditional fishing boats returning home, and leading to the town beach with the fish market and large quantities of fish out to dry in the sun ... plus a regular market set up behind the beach. A few blocks further and we found ourselves at the bottom end of Lewis Place and so we continued the walk until we got back to our guest house. Not exactly the restful afternoon that we planned - but some wonderful local scenes ......

After a cold bottle of Lion beer we headed out to dinner. All the restaurants in Lewis Place are for tourists - the one we ate at did a decent meal. It was certainly the first restaurant we had been to this trip with 100% non locals!
